Abe Powell to Receive Environmental Hero Award at EDC’s Green & Blue Event

April 23, 2019

Santa Barbara – On Sunday, June 2nd, the Environmental Defense Center (EDC) will honor John Abraham “Abe” Powell as part of the organization’s annual event: Green & Blue: A Coastal Celebration. Abe will be presented with EDC’s Environmental Hero Award which has previously been bestowed on other local and national leaders including Jane Fonda, Yvon Chouinard, Jack Johnson, Jean Michel Cousteau, and Jackson Brown, among others.

Abe is a fitting local addition to this illustrious group. He has been a Santa Barbara area resident since 1976 and throughout his life and career he has been a community and environmental leader, working to protect our climate and local environment.

Among his many accomplishments, Abe served as board President to long time EDC client and partner, Get Oil Out! (GOO!). He also founded SOLFORCE, a local solar energy company, served for six years as Director at Montecito Fire Protection District, and is now the Executive Director of the Santa Barbara Bucket Brigade, a non-profit organization that he and his wife Jessica created in response to the devastating January 9th, 2018 debris flows in Montecito. Over his time with the Bucket Brigade, more than 3,000 volunteers have come together to help restore the Montecito community by digging out homes, restoring landscapes and public trails, and rescuing hundreds of threatened oak trees from the mud and debris.

“Abe is a true leader and EDC is proud to recognize his lifetime of service at Green & Blue this year,” said Owen Bailey, EDC’s Executive Director. “In this changing climate, we are so grateful to Abe, who has spent his entire career at the forefront of community and environmental safety.”

EDC’s Green & Blue is the largest environmental fundraising event in our area. Each year, more than 600 people come together to celebrate environmental victories and to raise funds to support EDC’s work protecting and enhancing the local environment through education, advocacy, and legal action. In addition to the presentation of the Environmental Hero Award, Green & Blue features great food, local wine and beer, and both a live and silent auction. The event will take place at Rancho La Patera and Stow House in Goleta on Sunday, June 2nd from 2:00-5:30PM. Sponsorships and tickets are available by visiting http://www.EnvironmentalDefenseCenter.org/gb or by calling 805-963-1622.
