Chevron debris mounds
EDC represents four groups (Sierra Club, Citizens Planning Association, Get Oil Out! and Pacific Coast Federation of Fishermen’s Associations) in their attempt to force Chevron to clean up toxic debris mounds that were left in 1996 after the company removed four platforms near Summerland. State law requires that oil companies completely clean up any materials and obstructions from the seafloor, and restore the ocean to a natural condition. When Chevron removed the four platforms, the corporation left behind huge piles of debris that measure up to 200 feet in diameter and 30 feet in height. The mounds contain varying levels of heavy metals and toxic substances, and pose a navigational hazard. To learn more please refer to the California State Lands Commission environmental review study for the Chevron platform debris mounds. At present, the California State Lands Commission is reviewing several alternatives that will be analyzed in a new, updated Environmental Impact Report (EIR). Read EDC’s Comments on the initial Draft EIR for the Chevron Debris Mounds. |
