ACTION ALERT

****HELP PRESERVE PUBLIC ACCESS AT THE HEARST RANCH****

The Hearst Corporation has entered into a deal with the State that will transfer part of the Ranch to the State and place a conservation easement over most of the Ranch. The deal will prohibit any public access east of Highway 1, and will severely restrict access to the coast west of Highway 1 as follows:

(1) 20 people per month will be allowed to take guided tours at Ragged Point and Pico Cove;
(2) 100 people per day, 300 days per year, will be allowed at San Simeon Point, possibly on guided tours (plus an addition of two guided tours of 20 people each for Saturdays and Sundays during periods when public access is allowed); and
(3) restrictions on the location of the Coastal Trail.

All access west of the highway, whether on public or private lands, will be restricted to daytime use only and several types of uses will be prohibited. These conditions conflict with historic and existing coastal access on the Ranch. Accordingly, we are seeking evidence of such use in order to establish a permanent, irrevocable public right to continue using these trails and beaches. If you have enjoyed access at the Hearst Ranch, please complete and return the linked declaration. Please also feel free to forward the declaration to other people that have accessed these areas.

Get your tickets while they last! Be a part of EDC’s biggest fundraising event of the year!  Buy your tickets online and preview Live & Silent Auction items at http://edcnet.org/SupportPages/AuctionMainPage.html . Tickets to the auction are $100 and are also available by calling the Environmental Defense Center at 963-1622. We accept checks, cash, Visa and Master Card. There are many different ways you can help make this year’s auction a huge success.

Our honorees this year will be:   Singer/songwriter Kim and Jack Johnson whose Kokua Foundation educates schoolchildren about the environment and whose music and concerts encourage sustainability.  Coincidentally, you can find Jack on the cover of both Rolling Stone and Outdoor Magazines this month, as well as at the top of the charts for his new album.  California’s Lieutenant Governor John Garamendi has played a critical role in limiting oil and gas development off our coast and has been a strong advocate for environmental quality throughout the State.  Our first Youth Award will go to Tree Amigos, Sarah and Anna Schwab, two teen-agers from Orcutt who have become active land-use advocates.

Because we are expecting an enthusiastic response to this year’s event, it has been moved to Stow House in Goleta, where we will have much more room to stretch out and enjoy a beautiful afternoon.  Our auctioneer will be Fund for Santa Barbara Executive Director Geoff Green.

You can help us make this year’s event into the best auction ever by donating items for the auction, sponsoring the event and/or volunteering your time to help plan the auction. For more information contact Vickie Hormuth at 963-1622 ext 103 or vhormuth@edcnet.org

3.  Two Public Forums on Venoco’s Proposed Paredon Oil & Gas Drilling Project

WHAT:    A public forum to discuss Venoco’s proposed Paredon oil & gas drilling project in Carpinteria.

WHEN:    Tuesday, May 13, 2008, at 7pm.

WHERE: The Carpinteria Women’s Club
1059 Vallecito Road
Carpinteria.

Background
Please join EDC, the Carpinteria Valley Association and others for an evening of discussion about Venoco’s proposed Paredon oil & gas development project.  This project would require construction of a 175-foot rig on the parcel of land between Carpinteria City Hall and the Carpinteria seal sanctuary.  The rig tower would be visible from Stearns Wharf in Santa Barbara.  The project would subject neighborhoods and sensitive species to air pollution and the tremendous risk of an oil spill or upset of hazardous materials.  Come with questions, and leave ready to engage Carpinteria’s decision-makers on this critically ill-advised development proposal.

WHAT:    The City of Carpinteria’s Environmental Review Committee (ERC) will discuss certification of the project Environmental Impact Report (EIR) at a public meeting.

WHEN:    Monday, May 19, 2008, at 5:30pm.

WHERE: City Hall Council Chamber
5775 Carpinteria Avenue
Carpinteria.

Background
The City of Carpinteria’s ERC will review the project’s proposed Final EIR and communicate a recommendation regarding certification of the EIR to the City’s Planning Commission.  The Planning Commission will, in turn, make recommendations to City Council as to certification of the proposed Final EIR and various project approvals.  The ERC hearing is your first chance to be heard in this process – please attend and voice your concerns about a proposal to drill for oil in downtown Carpinteria.  Support EDC and our clients, the Carpinteria Valley Association, Citizens for the Carpinteria Bluffs, Get Oil Out! and the Sierra Club – Los Padres Chapter.
